    High throughput methodology for synthesis, screening, and optimization of solid state Lithium ion electrolytes

    A study of the lithium ion conductor Li3xLa2/3–xTiO3 solid solution and the surrounding composition space was carried out using a high throughput physical vapor deposition system. An optimum total ionic conductivity value of 5.45 × 10–4 S cm–1 was obtained for the composition Li0.17La0.29Ti0.54 (Li3xLa2/3–xTiO3x = 0.11). This optimum value was calculated using an artificial neural network model based on the empirical data. Due to the large scale of the data set produced and the complexity of synthesis, informatics tools were required to analyze the data. Partition analysis was carried out to determine the synthetic parameters of importance and their threshold values. Multivariate curve resolution and principal component analysis were applied to the diffraction data set. This analysis enabled the construction of phase distribution diagrams, illustrating both the phases obtained and the compositional zones in which they occur.     Selective Gene Expression by Postnatal Electroporation during Olfactory interneuron Nurogenesis

    Neurogenesis persists in the olfactory system throughout life. The mechanisms of how new neurons are generated, how they integrate into circuits, and their role in coding remain mysteries. Here we report a technique that will greatly facilitate research into these questions. We found that electroporation can be used to robustly and selectively label progenitors in the Subventicular Zone. The approach was performed postnatally, without surgery, and with near 100% success rates. Labeling was found in all classes of interneurons in the olfactory bulb, persisted to adulthood and had no adverse effects. The broad utility of electroporation was demonstrated by encoding a calcium sensor and markers of intracellular organelles. The approach was found to be effective in wildtype and transgenic mice as well as rats. Given its versatility, robustness, and both time and cost effectiveness, this method offers a powerful new way to use genetic manipulation to understand adult neurogenesis

    Rationalization of solid-state NMR multi-pulse decoupling strategies : coupling of spin I = ½ and half-integer quadrupolar nuclei

    This work benefited from a grant from Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR MOSAIC 13-BS08-0018-01).In this paper we undertake a study of the decoupling efficiency of the Multiple-Pulse (MP) scheme, and a rationalization of its parameterization and of the choice of instrumental set up. This decoupling scheme is known to remove the broadening of spin-1/2 spectra I, produced by the heteronuclear scalar interaction with a half-integer quadrupolar nucleus S, without reintroducing heteronuclear dipolar interaction. The resulting resolution enhancement depends on the set-up of the length of the series of pulses and delays of the MP, and some intrinsic material and instrumental parameters. Firstly through a numerical approach, this study investigates the influence of the main intrinsic material parameters (heteronuclear dipolar and J coupling, quadrupolar interaction, spin nature) and instrumental parameters (spinning rate, pulse field strength) on efficiency and resolution enhancement of the scalar decoupling scheme. A guideline is then proposed to obtain quickly and easily the best resolution enhancement via the rationalization of the instrumental and parameter set up. It is then illustrated and tested through experimental data, probing the efficiency of MP-decoupling set up using this guideline. Various spin systems were tested (31P-51V in VOPO4, 31P-93Nb in NbOPO4, 119Sn-17O in Y2Sn2O7), combined with simulations results.PostprintPostprintPeer reviewe

    The structure of volcanic cristobalite in relation to its toxicity; relevance for the variable crystalline silica hazard

    BACKGROUND: Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) continues to pose a risk to human health worldwide. Its variable toxicity depends on inherent characteristics and external factors which influence surface chemistry. Significant population exposure to RCS occurs during volcanic eruptions, where ashfall may cover hundreds of square km and exposure may last years. Occupational exposure also occurs through mining of volcanic deposits. The primary source of RCS from volcanoes is through collapse and fragmentation of lava domes within which cristobalite is mass produced. After 30 years of research, it is still not clear if volcanic ash is a chronic respiratory health hazard. Toxicological assays have shown that cristobalite-rich ash is less toxic than expected. We investigate the reasons for this by determining the physicochemical/structural characteristics which may modify the pathogenicity of volcanic RCS. Four theories are considered: 1) the reactivity of particle surfaces is reduced due to co-substitutions of Al and Na for Si in the cristobalite structure; 2) particles consist of aggregates of cristobalite and other phases, restricting the surface area of cristobalite available for reactions in the lung; 3) the cristobalite surface is occluded by an annealed rim; 4) dissolution of other volcanic particles affects the surfaces of RCS in the lung. METHODS: The composition of volcanic cristobalite crystals was quantified by electron microprobe and differences in composition assessed by Welch's two sample t-test. Sections of dome-rock and ash particles were imaged by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and elemental compositions of rims determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. RESULTS: Volcanic cristobalite contains up to 4 wt. % combined Al(2)O(3) and Na(2)O. Most cristobalite-bearing ash particles contain adhered materials such as feldspar and glass. No annealed rims were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The composition of volcanic cristobalite particles gives insight into previously-unconsidered inherent characteristics of silica mineralogy which may affect toxicity. The structural features identified may also influence the hazard of other environmentally and occupationally produced silica dusts. Current exposure regulations do not take into account the characteristics that might render the silica surface less harmful. Further research would facilitate refinement of the existing simple, mass-based silica standard by taking into account composition, allowing higher standards to be set in industries where the silica surface is modified.Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)Moyes Foundation - studentshi

    Can Reproductive Health Voucher Programs Improve Quality of Postnatal Care? A Quasi-Experimental Evaluation of Kenya’s Safe Motherhood Voucher Scheme

    This study tests the group-level causal relationship between the expansion of Kenya’s Safe Motherhood voucher program and changes in quality of postnatal care (PNC) provided at voucher-contracted facilities. We compare facilities accredited since program inception in 2006 (phase I) and facilities accredited since 2010-2011 (phase II) relative to comparable non-voucher facilities. PNC quality is assessed using observed clinical content processes, as well as client-reported outcome measures. Two-tailed unpaired t-tests are used to identify differences in mean process quality scores and client-reported outcome measures, comparing changes between intervention and comparison groups at the 2010 and 2012 data collection periods. Difference-in-differences analysis is used to estimate the reproductive health (RH) voucher program’s causal effect on quality of care by exploiting group-level differences between voucher-accredited and non-accredited facilities in 2010 and 2012. Participation in the voucher scheme since 2006 significantly improves overall quality of postnatal care by 39% (p=0.02), where quality is defined as the observable processes or components of service provision that occur during a PNC consultation. Program participation since phase I is estimated to improve the quality of observed maternal postnatal care by 86% (p=0.02), with the largest quality improvements in counselling on family planning methods (IRR 5.0; p=0.01) and return to fertility (IRR 2.6; p=0.01). Despite improvements in maternal aspects of PNC, we find a high proportion of mothers who seek PNC are not being checked by any provider after delivery. Additional strategies will be necessary to standardize provision of packaged postnatal interventions to both mother and new-born. This study addresses an important gap in the existing RH literature by using a strong evaluation design to assess RH voucher program effectiveness on quality improvement

    Probing the Inner Disk Emission of the Herbig Ae Stars HD 163296 and HD 190073

    The physical processes occurring within the inner few astronomical units of proto-planetary disks surrounding Herbig Ae stars are crucial to setting the environment in which the outer planet-forming disk evolves and put critical constraints on the processes of accretion and planet migration. We present the most complete published sample of high angular resolution H- and K-band observations of the stars HD 163296 and HD 190073, including 30 previously unpublished nights of observations of the former and 45 nights of the latter with the CHARA long-baseline interferometer, in addition to archival VLTI data. We confirm previous observations suggesting significant near-infrared emission originates within the putative dust evaporation front of HD 163296 and show this is the case for HD 190073 as well. The H- and K-band sizes are the same within (3±3)%(3 \pm 3)\% for HD 163296 and within (6±10)%(6 \pm 10)\% for HD 190073. The radial surface brightness profiles for both disks are remarkably Gaussian-like with little or no sign of the sharp edge expected for a dust evaporation front. Coupled with spectral energy distribution analysis, our direct measurements of the stellar flux component at H and K bands suggest that HD 190073 is much younger (<400 kyr) and more massive (~5.6 M_\odot) than previously thought, mainly as a consequence of the new Gaia distance (891 pc).Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
